PGA Tour Approves Two-Tier System with Promotion and Relegation

The PGA Tour has officially approved recommendations from the Future Competition Committee to introduce a promotion and relegation system starting in the 2028 season. The new structure will feature a top-level competition called the PGA Tour Championship Series, alongside a second-tier Challenger Series, aiming to create a more competitive and meritocratic environment.

Rory McIlroy Expresses Excitement

Rory McIlroy, a four-time major winner, issued a statement welcoming the changes. "Today's announcement is a positive step for professional golf. As more details emerge, it is encouraging to see the PGA Tour reaffirming the importance of meritocracy and creating a structure that will serve both players and fans well into the future," McIlroy said.

Championship Series Details

The Championship Series will feature 120-player fields with a 36-hole cut and minimum purses of $20 million per event. The season will run from approximately February to August, comprising 23 to 24 events. These will include the four majors, the Players Championship, season-ending tournaments, and team events like the Ryder Cup and Presidents Cup.
