Max Verstappen faces a pivotal decision on his Formula One future with Red Bull, a choice that will ripple through the grid and directly affect Liam Lawson's career. According to reports, Racing Bulls have already secured a seat for Red Bull junior Nikola Tsolov in 2027, meaning Lawson could be squeezed out if Verstappen remains at Red Bull.
Verstappen's Contract and Exit Clauses
Verstappen is under contract with Red Bull until 2028, but exit clauses exist. His manager, Raymond Vermeulen, told BILD: "We have a contract until 2028. Of course, there are exit clauses, which have always existed, but we have never redeemed one. On the contrary, we have always been loyal and will remain so. We want to continue on the path with Red Bull and Max to end his career here – but of course with the possibility of winning." Vermeulen added that a decision could come before the summer break.
Impact on Liam Lawson and Racing Bulls
Lawson and Arvid Lindblad are only contracted with Racing Bulls for the current season. SoyMotor reports that Tsolov, 19, has an agreement to take one of the Racing Bulls seats next season. The report describes Lawson as "superfluous" if Verstappen stays, while Lindblad could be promoted to Red Bull if Verstappen leaves. Tsolov, currently second in the Formula 2 championship with three wins in ten races, joined the Red Bull Junior Team last year after leaving the Alpine Academy.
Verstappen's Frustration in Barcelona
Verstappen expressed frustration after the Barcelona race, where he finished fourth, 17 seconds behind Lando Norris. He said: "Pretty lonely to be honest, for me the whole race. There was not so much going on – I was mainly just following the battle ahead on the screens, because for me, we were just too slow. On every compound we couldn't follow, so every stint we lost a few seconds." He added: "We just need to work harder and try to improve the car. The car's lacking in some places, but at the same time I think also tyre management, we're still a bit behind when you have the high-energy tracks."
What Verstappen's Decision Means for the Grid
If Verstappen exercises his exit clause, Red Bull could promote Lindblad, freeing up a Racing Bulls seat for Tsolov and potentially keeping Lawson. If Verstappen stays, Lawson may lose his seat. The decision is expected soon, with Vermeulen indicating clarity could come before the summer break.
