Manchester United's pre-season training commenced at Carrington on Thursday, with several academy graduates joining first-team players under new manager Michael Carrick. Among the youngsters present were Harry Amass, Shea Lacey, Tyler Fredricson, and Jack Fletcher, all eager to seize opportunities created by the absence of first-team stars due to World Cup commitments or post-tournament breaks.
Academy Prospects and First-Team Returners
Midfielder Toby Collyer, 22, also reported for training. While he is expected to feature early this summer, a loan move away from the club is anticipated during the transfer window. The presence of these young players highlights the club's focus on integrating youth talent during the pre-season period.
Several first-team regulars who missed out on World Cup selection were also present. Harry Maguire, Luke Shaw, and Mason Mount returned after being omitted from England's squad for the tournament. Ayden Heaven, Leny Yoro (who failed to make France's squad), and Joshua Zirkzee (left out of the Netherlands squad) were also in attendance. Dermot Mee reported after signing a new two-year contract, while Patrick Dorgu returned following Denmark's failure to qualify.
Opportunities for Full Pre-Season
Forwards Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko will also benefit from a full pre-season after Cameroon and Slovenia failed to qualify for the World Cup in North America. This extended training period could prove crucial for their integration into Carrick's system.
According to senior Manchester United football writer Tyrone Marshall, the early pre-season phase presents a significant opportunity for academy graduates to make their mark, especially with several first-team players still absent. The club's pre-season schedule will include friendlies and training camps as Carrick prepares for his first summer in charge at Old Trafford.
