Manchester United may need to break their own transfer rule to resolve the dilemma surrounding Marcus Rashford's immediate future. The winger is set to return to Old Trafford ahead of the new Premier League season after representing England at the World Cup.
Barcelona decline purchase option
Rashford spent last season on loan at Barcelona and wanted to stay permanently, but they decided against triggering their £26 million purchase clause. Instead, the Catalan giants chose to spend £69 million on Anthony Gordon before striking another deal to land Karim Adeyemi.
As such, it is unclear where Rashford will be playing his football with the return of the Premier League looming. He has not played for United since 2024 but remains tied down at Old Trafford for another two years.
Wage obstacle and interest from rivals
Rashford is earning £325,000 per week at United, having signed a five-year contract in July 2023. Those terms have effectively trapped him, placing him beyond the reach of other clubs. He was prepared to accept a considerable wage reduction to move to Barcelona, but that did not materialise.
The only sides who realistically possess the financial capability to acquire Rashford are in the Premier League. Tottenham, Chelsea and Arsenal have been monitoring his situation, though United do not want to conduct business with a domestic rival.
United's summer moves and Rashford's return
United have bolstered their midfield this summer through the acquisitions of Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos, with the sale of Rasmus Hojlund and the exits of Casemiro and Jadon Sancho helping release funds. Yet Rashford remains the largest piece of the puzzle still awaiting resolution.
Michael Carrick enjoys a strong rapport with Rashford, who is believed to hold no grudges towards the club following Ruben Amorim's departure. At present, he is scheduled to link up with the United squad for their Irish training camp in early August. Should that change, Rashford will need United to break their own strict rule to allow him to leave.
