Man Utd Join Arsenal and Barcelona in Julian Alvarez Transfer Battle
Man Utd Enter Julian Alvarez Transfer Race with Arsenal, Barca

Manchester United have reportedly been in direct contact with representatives of Julian Alvarez, entering the transfer battle for the Atletico Madrid striker alongside Arsenal and Barcelona. The saga intensified after Alvarez made an explosive exit declaration, criticising Barcelona, and after two substantial bids were rejected.

Real Madrid and Barcelona Bids Rejected

Both rejected bids came from Atletico's La Liga rivals. Real Madrid publicly confirmed their €150 million (£129 million) offer was declined, while Barcelona also saw a hefty bid turned down. In an effort to force a move, Alvarez made a striking admission while on World Cup duty with Argentina.

Speaking to ESPN, Alvarez said: "The best thing for me is a transfer and I want to fulfil my dream. I don't want to hide or act like I don't want to be clear. I try to be honest. I spoke to Atletico people and I think the best for everyone involved is for me to leave."

United Enter the Fray

Reports from Spain suggest Atletico Madrid do not plan to negotiate with Barcelona, seemingly positioning Arsenal as frontrunners. However, according to Diario AS journalist Marcos Duran, United have held discussions with Alvarez's agent after monitoring the 26-year-old's situation. Duran stated that United have funds available now they have secured Champions League football, and Alvarez's impressive displays at bitter rivals Manchester City have influenced their thinking.

Alvarez scored 36 goals in 103 appearances for Manchester City, often playing second fiddle to Erling Haaland. He has since become Atletico's key man, explaining the considerable interest in his services.

Midfield Targets Also on Radar

Having bolstered their attack last summer, midfield reinforcement is top of Michael Carrick's agenda for the 2026/27 campaign. A deal has been struck for Ederson to arrive from Atalanta, while West Ham's Mateus Fernandes is also a target. Tottenham have entered the race for Fernandes, and United face stiff competition from Roberto De Zerbi's side, who appear better placed to meet the Hammers' valuation and Fernandes' wage expectations.

Arsenal have also been linked with Fernandes but now seem focused on Lille's Ayyoub Bouaddi and Newcastle United skipper Bruno Guimaraes. His club teammate Sandro Tonali is attracting attention from both north London clubs, with the Italian favouring the Gunners but open to a move to Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
