Andy Burnham, the Greater Manchester mayor who has been heavily involved in the regeneration of the area surrounding the new stadium, recently stepped down after being appointed as MP for Makerfield. He is the favourite to succeed Keir Starmer as Prime Minister after Starmer announced his resignation. However, United sources have confirmed that the stadium plans will be unaffected by Burnham's departure. The Old Trafford regeneration project is covered by the Mayoral Development Corporation, which has been constituted by parliament and can only be unpicked by the government, ensuring continuity.
