Keely Hodgkinson's wish has been granted after West Ham's London Stadium was confirmed as a potential host venue for the 2029 World Athletics Championships. The announcement follows an agreement between West Ham United, London Stadium LLP, and Athletics Ventures, backed by the UK government and London mayor Sadiq Khan.
Agreement Reached After Detailed Negotiations
Initial concerns that the bid would be derailed by stadium availability were resolved after detailed negotiations. The World Athletics Championships typically take place in August or September, clashing with the football season, but organisers ensured minimal impact on West Ham's schedule.
West Ham had previously claimed a 'contractual right' to prioritize their games, but after talks, a deal was struck. The club stated that "the highest priority has always been the West Ham United supporters," and the agreement ensures "minimal impact" on their season.
Hodgkinson's Light-Hearted Jab
Hodgkinson, an avid Manchester United fan, jokingly responded on X: "The GB team will bring back more medals to that stadium than West Ham have seen in their entire history." The comment drew criticism from some fans, but the Olympic gold-medallist clarified she "enjoyed the rattled comments" and urged West Ham to "let us have this moment."
She added: "In all seriousness, to have a global championships back in London would be incredible for our sport. I didn't think we'd get the opportunity again during my career."
West Ham and UK Athletics Statements
A West Ham statement confirmed the agreement, noting it "follows a period of detailed negotiations with the organisers, London Stadium operators, local and national government officials, and the relevant football governing bodies." Any impact on the football schedule will be confirmed once the club's division for the 2029/30 season is known.
UK Athletics CEO Jack Buckner said: "Bidding to hold the World Athletics Championships in the London Stadium, the showpiece of London 2012, was always at the centre of the UK’s Olympic legacy plans. We’re delighted that we have reached agreement with the London Stadium and West Ham United for the use of the London Stadium and our sincere thanks for their commitment in making this happen."
London last hosted the World Athletics Championships in 2017. The 62,500-capacity stadium was built for the 2012 Olympics and has been West Ham's home since 2016.
