Liverpool Under-21s have learned their opponents for the 2026/27 EFL Trophy group stage, with the draw placing them in Group H alongside League One sides Huddersfield Town and Doncaster Rovers, as well as League Two outfit Rochdale.
Group Stage Details
The young Reds, once again managed by head coach Rob Page, will play all three group matches away from home between September and early December. This marks the third time Liverpool have faced Rochdale in the competition.
The EFL Trophy features 48 teams from League One and League Two, plus 16 invited Under-21 sides from Premier League clubs. However, Manchester United have declined their invitation this season due to their participation in the UEFA Youth League, a contrast to Liverpool's approach of balancing both commitments.
Liverpool's Track Record
Liverpool have taken part in the EFL Trophy for the eighth time this season, having won only one of their previous 22 games in the competition. Their sole victory came in the 2023/24 campaign against Morecambe, which was enough to secure a place in the last 32 for the first time. They were subsequently eliminated 4-0 by Bradford City, with Lewis Koumas sent off in the first half.
In addition, the Reds have twice earned a bonus point after winning penalty shootouts following draws, most recently in their final group game last season after a 2-2 draw at Chesterfield.
Manchester United's Absence
Manchester United's decision to withdraw from the EFL Trophy this season stems from their involvement in the UEFA Youth League, a competition they are prioritising. Liverpool, however, have managed to participate in both the EFL Trophy and the UEFA Youth League in six of the last seven seasons and will do so again this term.
