Kai Rooney, son of Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney, made his long-awaited UEFA Youth League debut for the club's Under-18s in a 3-0 defeat to Atletico Madrid in Spain. The 16-year-old forward returned from a foot injury that had brought his previous season to an end in March.
Return after injury lay-off
The injury also ruled Rooney out of the Under-18s FA Youth Cup final against local rivals Manchester City, which ended in a 2-1 defeat for United in May. It was not the first time the youngster had been sidelined by injury during the campaign.
At the time, the forward expressed his disappointment on Instagram, writing: "Disappointed to be out for the rest of the season. Back stronger next pre-season."
Despite his injury troubles, Rooney had fond memories of his 2025/26 campaign. He helped the Under-16s group win the Super Cup NI and made his breakthrough with United's Under-18s before his progress was halted by injury.
Match fitness and development
After a lengthy spell on the sidelines, he returned to action and made his first appearance in the UEFA Youth League. The match took place on Tuesday afternoon, just hours before the senior sides met at the Wanda Metropolitano.
The youngster had already begun building up his match fitness in the Under-18s' 2-2 draw against Chelsea in the Premier League Cup at the weekend, playing 77 minutes. Against Atletico, Rooney came on for Jacob Watson in the 66th minute as the Red Devils suffered a heavy defeat in Spain.
Although Rooney was unable to make an impact, his return represents an important step after a frustrating period out of action. Having gained experience with United's Under-18s and featured in pre-season, the forward will now be looking to regain full match sharpness and continue his development at youth level.
Progress at United
Rooney has made impressive progress since joining United in 2020, following in the footsteps of his father, Wayne, the club's all-time leading goalscorer. He made his first appearance at Old Trafford last season, playing 21 minutes in United's FA Youth Cup fourth-round victory over Derby County in January.
The teenager was then an unused substitute for the quarter-final win against Sunderland in March and also helped the Under-16s lift the Premier League Shield. Having signed a scholarship agreement in July to enter United's Professional Development Phase, Rooney will be eligible to sign his first professional contract when he turns 17 on November 2.
His path at the club appears considerably clearer than that of fellow prospect JJ Gabriel, whose future at United remains uncertain. Gabriel requested his release from United last month and has yet to return to Carrington. Instead, he has reportedly spent the past three weeks in Castelldefels, Catalonia, training with a private coach. United are understood to have offered Gabriel a scholarship contract, having become eligible for one after turning 16 on October 6.
