Chelsea defeated Western Sydney Wanderers 6-4 in a wild pre-season friendly at Accor Stadium, with Joao Pedro netting a nine-minute hat-trick after coming off the bench.
First-half action
Dastan Satpaev gave Chelsea an early lead, racing onto Ryan Kavuma-McQueen's through ball and firing into the roof of the net. The Wanderers equalised almost immediately when centre-back Anthony Pantazopoulos headed home from a corner at the back post. Aydan Hammond then put the hosts ahead, skipping past Josh Acheampong and finishing low past Teddy Sharman-Lowe. Dario Essugo levelled before half-time, finishing first-time from Reggie Walsh's lay-off.
Second-half chaos
Western Sydney Wanderers retook the lead early in the second half, but substitute Jamie Gittens made it 3-3 with his third goal in as many pre-season games. The sides traded goals again, with the Wanderers capitalising on more Chelsea defensive lapses before Joao Pedro equalised. The Brazilian then scored twice more in quick succession to complete his hat-trick and extend Chelsea's perfect pre-season start.
Player ratings
Teddy Sharman-Lowe 6: Far more involved than expected. Almost kept out Pantazopoulos's equaliser, having saved from Liam Gillion earlier. Could do little about the other goals.
Josh Acheampong 5: Too tentative in the tackle for the second goal. Calm on the ball but perhaps overconfident.
Tosin Adarabioyo 4: Struggled against Western Sydney's willingness to attack. Lucky not to be punished for a loose pass on the edge of the box, and twice missed from corners.
Olutayo Subuloye 6: Encouraging if not standout performance from Chelsea's scholar of the year. Supported the attack well.
Landon Emenalo 6: Good touches and turns but struggled tracking his man in transition. Fired over after being found free in the box.
Reggie Walsh 7: Helped set the tempo alongside Watson. Neat touches and draw fouls in a tidy display.
Reggie Watson 8: Confident performance from the 16-year-old. Dropped deep to progress the ball and played accurate first-time passes. Tosin should have done better from his corners.
Dario Essugo 8: Handled the ball well despite the pitch state and scored a superb first-time equaliser. Used physicality and acceleration to drive Chelsea forward.
Liam Delap 4: Could not bring the ball under control and struggled to make an impact. Some half-chances when pulling into channels.
Dastan Satpaev 7: Dream start to his Chelsea career, smashing in the early lead. Thankless runner thereafter.
Ryan Kavuma-McQueen 7: Lovely through ball for Satpaev's opener. Struggled once the Wanderers seized control after their equaliser.
Substitutes
Omari Kellyman 6: Good to see him on the pitch after a tough injury spell since joining Chelsea.
Mahdi Nicolo-Jazuli 7: Confident display from the Sydney-born teenager. Carried the ball through the lines and provided defensive presence.
Estevao 5: Left Watson short with a lay-off in the build-up to the fourth goal. Remarkable recovery from a hamstring injury, but must be careful not to rush him.
Robert Sanchez 6: Looked to attack through distribution. Had little to do despite failing to keep a clean sheet.
Cole Palmer 8: Heavily involved, spraying passes and providing options. Wonderful through ball set up Joao Pedro's simple finish.
Marco Palestra 6: First minutes in a Chelsea shirt. Solid outing with some nice glimpses going forward.
Wesley Fofana 6: Saw his header blocked before Joao Pedro scrambled home his hat-trick.
Aaron Anselmino 6: One of many Chelsea centre-backs with uncertain future. Will hope for more minutes on tour.
Levi Colwill 7: Talked pre-game about the confidence to play progressively. His pass set up the move for Chelsea's third goal.
Jamie Gittens 8: Continued excellent pre-season with a goal off the bench, tapping in from Joao Pedro's cut-back.
Joao Pedro 10: The difference maker. Immediately showed quality to set up Gittens, then scored a composed equaliser, added a second from Palmer's pass, and completed a nine-minute hat-trick from close range.
