Ireland international James Lowe has officially signed for Japanese club Tokyo Suntory Sungoliath after leaving Leinster at the end of the season. The 34-year-old wing's move had been widely speculated after weeks of uncertainty over his future.
Lowe's departure from Leinster sparked anger in Ireland after it emerged that a deal to keep him with the United Rugby Championship winners until next year's World Cup was withdrawn at the last minute. He was then offered half the money, prompting the upset star to decide to leave.
Move to Japan confirmed
Lowe was immediately linked with a switch to Tokyo to replace Springbok star Cheslin Kolbe, and the transfer has now been officially confirmed. The New Zealand-born wing's move is expected to end his Test career, with the Irish Rugby Football Union likely to stick by its policy of only selecting players based with one of the four Irish provinces.
However, head coach Andy Farrell has not completely ruled out the possibility of Lowe adding to his 45 international caps, despite describing his exit from Irish rugby as "disappointing".
Lowe's statement on joining Sungoliath
In a statement released by his new club on Monday, Lowe expressed his excitement about the move. "To everyone in the Suntory Sungoliath family, my family and I are incredibly excited to begin this new chapter of our lives in Japan," he said.
"I have some very special memories from playing there. I have always admired the passion for rugby, the respect shown both on and off the field, and the pride people take in representing their team and I am looking forward to learning more about Japan and its culture."

Career highlights
Lowe scored 17 tries in 45 appearances for Ireland, winning two Six Nations titles with Farrell's side and touring Australia with the British & Irish Lions last year. He also became Leinster's top try-scorer in his nine seasons at the province, crossing the whitewash 71 times in 101 appearances.
