House of the Dragon season three was filmed in Wales and other parts of the UK, with production returning to North Wales during the summer of 2025.
Return to Wales
One of the show's executive producers, Kevin De La Boy, said in a statement: “House of the Dragon Cast and Crew were delighted to return to Wales, to a landscape and locale that adds such visual power and vibrant dimension to the storytelling.”
The series, which premiered on June 22, follows Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma D’Arcy) as she takes the Iron Throne promised to her by her father, Viserys Targaryen (Paddy Considine), facing opposition from Aemond Targaryen (Ewan Mitchell) and others.
Key Locations
Beaumaris Pier in Anglesey, built in 1846, offers views of the Menai Strait and the mountains of Eryri (Snowdonia) National Park. The nearby Beaumaris Castle, a UNESCO heritage site, is known as 'the greatest castle never built'.
Craig Yr Undeb (Union Rock) in Gwynedd, a craggy outcrop near Llyn Padarn, was a meeting place for quarrymen during the Victorian era, including during a strike in the 1880s. It is also popular with rock climbers.
Ffynnon Llugwy, a 40-acre lake in Eryri National Park, serves as a reservoir for Anglesey and Bangor and is a starting point for hikers heading towards peaks like Carnedd Llewelyn.

House of the Dragon has previously been filmed at Warner Bros. Leavesden Studios in Watford, as well as in Spain, Portugal, Cornwall, and Derbyshire. Earlier Welsh locations include Yr Eifl Granite Quarry, Dinorwig Quarry, Ogwen Valley, the Penmachno Roman Bridge, Penmon Point, Beaumaris Beach, Llanddwyn Beach, and Porth y Cwch.
