Daily Star's Carly Hacon grew up watching Grease on repeat on VHS, so stepping into the world of Rydell High for the night was always going to be a big deal. Grease: The Immersive Movie Musical at Evolution London in Battersea Park managed to be even more nostalgic than expected, transporting guests straight into the 1950s.
Immersive Experience at Evolution London
The experience, which runs until September 13, invites fans to step into Rydell High as the story unfolds around them. It combines live performances, the original film, and a host of interactive moments. From start to finish, Hacon loved it.
Walking into the venue, the first thing that caught her eye was the fairground, complete with rides and carnival games. It immediately felt like walking into the final scenes of the film. The main arena then brought the magic, with attention to detail brilliant, from seating designed to look like a classic drive-in cinema to the American diner-inspired Frosty Palace area.
Interactive Fun and Live Performances
The official experience offers themed seating at both Frosty Diner and The Drive In, with guests able to roam around and return to their seats. But this isn't something you simply sit down and watch. Actors wandered around in character, and audience members could speak to and interact with them as the story played out. At certain points, audience members were even invited to get involved on stage and show off their best dance moves.
Hacon's favourite moment was the National Dance-Off, which took place in the 'school gymnasium'. Before she knew it, she was jiving along to the music and completely caught up in the atmosphere. Between scenes, guests could also head outside and have a go on some of the fairground rides themselves, including the fun house.
A Nostalgic Night to Remember
The live vocals were another highlight, with Hacon singing along throughout while scenes from the original 1978 film played across surrounding screens alongside the live action. The production is designed to blend cinema and stage performance, with the story and songs brought to life around the audience.
The atmosphere was infectious. Fans are encouraged to dress up, so there were Pink Ladies everywhere, with huge smiles and people fully embracing the nostalgia. Hacon took her mum, and days later they were still talking about it. For her, that's what made the experience so special – it wasn't just watching Grease again, but getting the chance to actually be part of it.
After years of watching Sandy, Danny and the gang from her sofa, becoming a student of Rydell High for the night was an experience she'll genuinely remember. It was one of the best London nights out she's had in a long time, and for Grease fans, this is absolutely one for the diary.
