John Swinney has praised Glasgow for stepping in to save the 2026 Commonwealth Games after the original host pulled out 18 months ago. The city is now hosting thousands of athletes and visitors, with a global audience of hundreds of millions.
Economic boost and sporting legacy
The First Minister highlighted the £150m economic benefit expected from the Games, as well as a £20m investment in a summer of sport programme offering free and low-cost activities. Swinney said: 'It’s been a tough few years for a lot of people but we should all try to see ourselves as others see us.'
Future major events
Swinney noted that future sporting events include the Tour de France Grand Depart, the Open at St Andrews, and co-hosting the 2028 Euros. He thanked everyone involved, saying: 'Glasgow, you have been magnificent.'
Political context
The First Minister also met new Prime Minister Andy Burnham, describing him as the first PM to acknowledge Westminster has failed Scotland. Swinney reiterated his goal for independence, saying Scotland is on a 'trajectory towards independence' with the largest pro-independence majority in the history of the Scottish Parliament.
