Gateshead have been dealt a major blow after it was confirmed director and key shareholder Mark Nellist has resigned from his position and revealed his concern over the direction of his hometown club.
The Gateshead-born businessman has become integral to matters at the International Stadium since putting his financial support behind a supporter-led takeover that rescued the Heed from going out of business during the summer of 2019.
Rescue and rise
After moving to within 72 hours of folding under former owner Ranjan Varghese and controversial financial advisor Joseph Cala, a consortium that contained the Gateshead Soul supporters group was able to rescue the Tynesiders and set them on a path to one of the most successful periods in their history.
However, recent supporter concerns about the direction Gateshead was travelling on and off the pitch have now been further compounded by the news. Nellist has revealed he will step away from his role with his hometown club and revealed his pride over the part he had played in their successes of the last seven years - albeit as part of a damning statement released on official club channels.
Statement details
In a statement released by Gateshead on Tuesday afternoon, Nellist claimed the club was no longer 'heading in the direction that he would have liked or hoped for' and explained that was the key factor in his decision to step away from his role.
He said: "It is with great sadness that I confirm my resignation as a Director of Gateshead Football Club. Having dedicated a significant amount of time, commitment and personal financial support to the club over the years, this is not a decision I have taken lightly.
"I have always wanted to see Gateshead Football Club succeed, develop and move forward in a positive and sustainable direction, and I have been proud to play my part in supporting the club throughout that journey.
"Unfortunately, I no longer feel that the club is heading in the direction that I would have liked or hoped for, and I therefore feel that the time is right for me to step away from my position as a director."
On-field struggles
After initially being relegated into the National League North as part of their punishment for financial irregularities under their former owner, the Heed returned to the top tier of non-league football in 2022 and went on to reach the FA Trophy final over the following two seasons.
There was Wembley glory under former manager Rob Elliot when the Heed were crowned as FA Trophy winners following a penalty shoot-out win against Solihull Moors two years after their promotion.
Although several players have been sold on to EFL and National League clubs in recent seasons, Nellist's financial commitment has been integral to allowing Gateshead to continue competing in step one throughout that time.
There have also been some difficult moments during that time with the Heed placed under a FIFA registration ban on two separate occasions and they were removed from the National League play-offs over an issue with the security of tenure on the International Stadium.
However, there are genuine concerns over the Heed's National League status after Lee Cattermole's side embarked on a run of just one win in their first 10 games that has left them six points from safety ahead of Tuesday night's home game with Altrincham.
Heed supporters were alerted to the news earlier on Tuesday afternoon when a Companies House document revealed Nellist's appointment as a club director had been terminated and that has sparked further concern over what could lie ahead at the International Stadium.
Nellist went on to reveal his 'genuine sadness' over his departure - but wished the club 'every success for the future' as they now enter a period of major uncertainty.
He continued: "I leave with genuine sadness, but also with the knowledge that I have given the club my full commitment and support, both personally and financially, throughout my time involved.
"I would like to thank everyone who has supported the club and worked alongside me during my time as a Director, and I sincerely wish Gateshead Football Club, its players, staff, supporters and everyone connected with the club every success for the future. I wish the club all the very best for the future."
