Alejandro Garnacho has completed a season-long loan move to Aston Villa from Chelsea, just over a year after being on the receiving end of a brutal putdown at Manchester United. The 22-year-old was told he was free to leave Stamford Bridge after an underwhelming season following his move from United.
Amorim's blunt message
Garnacho had a tetchy relationship with Erik ten Hag and Ruben Amorim. The latter reportedly became so exasperated with the Argentine that he told him he was leaving the club in front of his team-mates. Ahead of the final league game of the season, Amorim reportedly told Garnacho during a training session: "You better hope you have a good agent this summer."
Garnacho's outburst
By that point, the dye had already been cast on his United career, with Garnacho angling for a move away. The relationship soured further when Garnacho spoke to the media after the loss to Spurs in Bilbao, saying: "Our season was s***. We didn't beat anyone in the league. We lacked a lot of things. When you don't score goals, you always need more." He added: "Until we reached the final, I played every round. And I played 20 minutes today. I don't know. I'm going to try to enjoy the summer and see what happens next."
Move to Chelsea and Villa
He then sealed a £40m move to Chelsea, where he scored eight goals in 43 appearances in all competitions last season. He is now looking to recapture his form from his early days at Old Trafford. Garnacho said after sealing his move to Villa: "I was looking for a club to get confidence at and to try to be the player I was in my first years at Manchester United. I spoke with the manager and I think he will give me the confidence to be here and to help the team." He added: "I saw the Europa League last season and now we're joining the Champions League. It's important to be a part of this. I spoke with Unai before I came here and he gave me confidence. That's why I'm here."
