Fulham players walked off the pitch after their pre-season friendly with La Liga side Malaga, seemingly snubbing a penalty shootout, as a Malaga player was seen scoring into an empty net to cheers from the home crowd. The Premier League side later clarified that both teams had agreed beforehand there would be no shootout in the event of a draw.
Red card for Arbeloa after full-time
The match, which finished 2-2, saw new Fulham boss Alvaro Arbeloa shown a straight red card after the 90 minutes. He was seen remonstrating with officials and was sent off as home fans jeered the decision.
Fulham players shook hands with the opposition and applauded their travelling fans before leaving the pitch, while Malaga stars watched on with confusion. One Malaga player then lined up a shot and scored into an empty net.
Club statement explains confusion
Fulham released a statement saying: "Thank you for your excellent support in Malaga this evening! We can confirm that prior to the match, both teams agreed that there would not be a penalty shootout in the event of a draw."
Goals from Sessegnon, Iwobi and late penalty
Ryan Sessegnon opened the scoring for Fulham after 24 minutes, but Malaga's Chupe equalised four minutes later. Alex Iwobi restored Fulham's lead just before the hour mark after good play from Timothy Castagne, with Eneko Jauregi scoring a late penalty to draw level in the dying moments of the game.
