Ex-Morrisons Driver Joe Dean Shoots for Open Final at Royal Birkdale
Ex-Morrisons Driver Joe Dean Targets Open Final at Birkdale

Joe Dean, a former delivery driver for Morrisons, is on the verge of securing a spot in The Open Championship after shooting a brilliant 65 in the first round of final qualifying at Royal Birkdale. The 26-year-old from Sheffield carded seven birdies and just two bogeys to lead the field by one stroke, setting up a potential dream debut at Royal Liverpool next week.

From Supermarket Shelves to Major Stage

Dean, who worked for the supermarket chain until last year, turned professional in 2022 and has been grinding on the EuroPro Tour and Challenge Tour. His round at Birkdale, a former Open venue, included a run of three consecutive birdies from the 13th hole. “I just tried to stay patient and take my chances,” Dean said. “It’s a special feeling to lead here.”

The qualifying event features 72 players vying for 12 places at The 151st Open. Dean’s nearest challenger is English amateur John Gough, who shot 66. Former Ryder Cup player Andrew ‘Beef’ Johnston is also in contention after a 68.

Qualifying Pressure Intensifies

The second and final round takes place on Tuesday, with the top 12 advancing to Royal Liverpool. Dean admitted the nerves will be higher: “I’ll just try to do the same things. I’ve got nothing to lose.”

Royal Birkdale has hosted The Open 10 times, most recently in 2017 when Jordan Spieth won. The course’s demanding layout tests every aspect of a player’s game, and Dean’s bogey-free stretch in the middle of his round showcased his resilience.
