The FA Community Shield match between Arsenal and Manchester City takes place in Cardiff this weekend and roads will be closed for the major event.
The match will take place on Sunday, August 16, at the Principality Stadium and whether or not you are attending the event or just preparing to travel around Cardiff this weekend it is worth planning your journey in advance.
Not only will there inevitably be congestion this weekend as fans head to the match in time for kick off at 3pm, but there will also be plenty of road closures in place to facilitate the event from 10am to 8pm.
Road closures
Several road closures will be put in place to facilitate the event. The council say from 7am Scott Road and Park Street will be closed because of the need to prepare Gate 5 of the stadium and protect queuing fans.
In addition to this, the following roads will be closed from 10am to 8pm:
- Kingsway from its junction with North Road to its junction with Duke Street
- Cowbridge Road East from its junction with Cathedral Road to its junction with Westgate Street
- Tudor Street from its junction with Clare Road to its junction with Wood Street (access for residents and traders will be permitted via Fitzhammon Embankment)
- Plantagenet Street and Beauchamp Street from their junctions with Despenser Place to their junctions with Tudor Street (access for residents and traders will be permitted)
- Duke Street
- Castle Street
- High Street
- St Mary Street
- Caroline Street
- Wood Street
- Central Square
- Westgate Street
- Quay Street
- Guildhall Place
- Golate
- Havelock Street
Station Terrace and Guildford Street, from the Newport Road junction to the Churchill Way junction, will be restricted to bus access only during the designated closure periods. This measure has been implemented to guarantee dependable bus routes to Churchill Way.
Station Terrace will face an additional two-hour closure, running from 4.30pm to 6.30pm, enabling Queen Street Station to maintain safe operations.
Sections of the Civic Centre will only be for event parking, limited commuter parking, loading activities and access to private car parks. Roads affected include King Edward VII Avenue, Museum Avenue, City Hall Road, College Road, and Gorsedd Gardens Road.
Penarth Road will also be shut 30 minutes before the match's end and for up to an hour following the final whistle on safety grounds for rail passengers arriving at and departing from the station.
Parking
The council has also arranged for specific parking for fans travelling to the event.
Coach and minibus parking for Arsenal fans is located at Lloyd George Avenue - CF10 5EJ. Access is via the M4 over the Severn Crossing, leaving at Junction 28, then along the A48 to Eastern Avenue, joining the A4232 Southern Way and continuing via Rover Way, then taking the Eastern Bay Link Road, and following Caspian Way, Pierhead Street and Bute Street to Lloyd George Avenue. Arsenal fans can pre-book coach and minibus parking to guarantee a space through this link.
Car, coach and minibus parking for Manchester City fans is located at Civic Centre - CF10 3AX. Access is via leaving the M4 at Junction 32/A470, travelling south along the A470/Manor Way following the designated signs for the Civic Centre, with access via Corbett Road and additional entry points via College Road and Gorsedd Gardens Road. Manchester City fans can pre-book coach and minibus parking to guarantee a space through this link.
The cost on the day is £20 per car and £30 per coach or minibus.
Additional parking
Both car parks at Cardiff Central station will be closed, however the multi-storey car park will remain open.
There are also plenty of city centre car parks available, including North Road Car Parks, St David's Shopping Centre, John Lewis, Capitol Shopping Centre, and NCP (Adam Street, Dumfries Place and Greyfriars Road).
Disabled parking can be booked through the Principality Stadium on a first-come, first-serve basis.
