Liverpool manager Arne Slot has delivered a significant update on the club's January transfer plans, casting doubt over a renewed move for Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi.
Slot's Squad Satisfaction Hints at Transfer Priorities
The Reds saw a dramatic £35 million deal for Guehi collapse on deadline day in September, with Palace pulling the plug at the last moment. Despite maintaining a long-term interest in the England international, Slot's latest comments suggest a move this month is unlikely.
"I never talk about transfers in public, let alone talking about a transfer from another club," Slot stated on Wednesday. "My answer is always the same. We don't talk about players that are not ours."
He emphasised his contentment with the current squad, adding: "I am really happy with the squad we have." Slot pointed to the alignment between himself, sporting director Richard Hughes, and the club's ownership over past decisions, praising the talent within his group.
Manchester City Emerge as January Threat for Guehi
The landscape for Guehi's immediate future has shifted, with Manchester City now a serious contender. City are grappling with a defensive injury crisis, having lost key centre-backs Josko Gvardiol and Ruben Dias.
This has potentially opened the door for a January move, allowing them to beat other suitors to the punch. Palace manager Oliver Glasner acknowledged the financial reality facing the club, with Guehi's contract set to expire in June 2026.
"If somebody is coming, there will be a moment when the club says, now the financial issue is more important than the sport issue," Glasner admitted. He conceded that a "massive offer" from a club like City could force a sale this month.
The Financial Equation and Liverpool's Position
Glasner indicated that Crystal Palace would consider selling their prized asset for a fee in the region of £40 million. This represents a £5 million increase on the sum agreed with Liverpool last summer.
While Liverpool's interest persists, Slot's public backing of his current defensive options, coupled with the inflated January price, suggests the Reds may prefer to wait until the summer to pursue Guehi on a free transfer, albeit with heightened competition.
