Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson is set for his first major decision of the January transfer window, with striker Paul Mullin returning to the club after his loan spell at Wigan Athletic was cut short.
Loan Spell Ends as Mullin Heads Back to North Wales
Parkinson confirmed the development following his side's impressive 2-1 Championship victory away at Derby County on Sunday. The 31-year-old forward, who joined League One side Wigan on a season-long loan last summer, is due back at the Racecourse Ground this week for direct talks about his future.
Mullin's time with the Latics proved inconsistent, yielding five goals in all competitions. Speculation about an early recall intensified after he was omitted from several recent matchday squads, despite Wigan boss Ryan Lowe previously stating the matter was being dealt with internally.
"Mulls' loan spell has been terminated," Parkinson stated. "We'll have a chat with him this week when he comes back in. He needs to train this week as he's missed a few days of training."
A Club Icon Facing an Uncertain Future
Paul Mullin remains a legendary figure in Wrexham's modern history, having scored 110 goals over four seasons and playing a pivotal role in the club's remarkable ascent from the National League to the Championship. His profile has been amplified by featuring in the 'Welcome to Wrexham' documentary and a cameo in the 'Deadpool & Wolverine' movie, and he shares a strong bond with Hollywood owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney.
However, his standing shifted during the second half of last season's League One promotion campaign, where he fell out of favour under Parkinson. Ongoing injury problems have also hampered his progress in recent years.
Parkinson admitted contact has been limited over the busy festive period. "I've only spoken to him briefly over the Christmas period," he said. "We haven't really been in training much because of the games and staying in hotels. I'll touch base with him on the way back today and we'll have a good chat when he comes in this week."
What Comes Next for Mullin and Wrexham?
The striker's next move is clouded in uncertainty. Wrexham's attacking ranks are well-stocked, with Kieffer Moore, Nathan Broadhead, Josh Windass, and Sam Smith all providing options for Parkinson. The club currently sits ninth in the Championship, just one point off the play-offs after winning all four of their festive fixtures.
Potential outcomes for Mullin include another loan move away this month or even a permanent departure from North Wales. Parkinson is keen to assess the situation in person before any final decision is made.
Mullin himself acknowledged the uncertainty earlier this season. Speaking to talkSPORT in October, he said: "I loved my time at Wrexham, and it might not be over, who knows, but that's not up to me... I absolutely loved my time at Wrexham. It became my club and I absolutely adored all the fans and everything about the club. But if it's not to be and they don't end up wanting me back, then I'll live."
