Man Utd set for McTominay windfall as Real Madrid circle

Manchester United could be in line for a transfer windfall as Scott McTominay attracts interest from across Europe, intensifying speculation over his future at Napoli. The midfielder has been linked with a potential Premier League return, which could deliver his former club a significant financial boost.

McTominay's Napoli rise

McTominay left United in the summer of 2024 to join Napoli in a permanent transfer valued at £25.9million (€30.5million). The Scotland international has since become a key figure in the Italian club's midfield.

He helped Napoli to the Serie A title in his debut season, with the club finishing second behind Inter Milan last term. Though he appears settled and remains an important player for Napoli as he recovers from a heart operation, rumours of a potential exit persist.

Contract talks and interest

McTominay is reportedly in contract negotiations with Napoli, creating the possibility of a January departure should both sides fail to agree. Italian publication Tutto Mercato suggests there is 'danger' that an exit 'could become more and more concrete'.

Real Madrid are understood to have made preliminary inquiries to assess the situation, while additional Premier League interest could emerge. Napoli are apparently keen to delay any sale until the summer, though it remains unclear whether they can keep McTominay when the transfer window reopens in January.

Sell-on clause boost

Reports suggest McTominay is 'open' to the idea of a Premier League comeback. The midfielder spent 22 years at Old Trafford after coming through Manchester United's youth system.

Sky Sports had previously revealed that United had 'enquired' about potentially bringing McTominay back, with Aston Villa also reportedly showing interest. The report added that the midfielder's agents maintain dialogue with 'several' Premier League clubs, though it is uncertain whether United are among them.

Should McTominay leave Napoli for another team in the coming period, United stand to gain financially, assuming the move is not a return to Old Trafford. The club secured a sell-on clause when negotiating the midfielder's move to Italy in 2024.

Under that arrangement, United are due 10% of any subsequent transfer fee. This could result in a substantial windfall, given the 29-year-old has enhanced his reputation through impressive performances for both club and country in recent seasons.
