Manchester United have confirmed the sale of young winger Ethan Williams to Peterborough United for a “sizeable undisclosed fee”. The 20-year-old, who spent last season on loan at Falkirk, featured in pre-season with United’s first team, making appearances against Wrexham, Rosenborg and Atletico Madrid.
Williams targets regular football
Williams has left United to launch his professional career in the lower leagues. Peterborough finished in the bottom half of League One last season but will aim to mount a play-off push in the upcoming campaign.
Responding to the transfer, Williams said: “The identity of this club is clear, they like to work with younger players and when I heard of the interest, it was a move that I wanted to make. I have been out on loan at a couple of clubs, have gained a lot of experience in men's football and felt it was the right time to leave United and sign for Peterborough.”
Peterborough boss impressed
Peterborough manager Luke Williams added: “Ethan is a player that will give us another option in the wide areas, he is quick, direct and will be a threat and I am looking forward to working with him. He has already got first team experience at a few clubs and joins us after being away with Manchester United on their pre-season tour, so he is fit and ready to go.”
United extended their best wishes to Williams in an official club statement, saying: “Academy forward Ethan Wiliams has agreed a move to League One side Peterborough United, subject to registration. The 20-year-old played an important role in our Under-18s' success during the 2023/24 campaign, scoring seven times in 11 U18 Premier League games as the Reds claimed both the northern and national titles, as well as the Premier League Cup. He now joins Luke Williams’ squad ahead of The Posh’s first league game of the season, away to Bradford City on Saturday. Everybody at United wishes Ethan all the best for the next chapter of his career.”
