Man Utd heroes 'raving' about £75m target in WhatsApp group

Carlos Baleba is a transfer target for Manchester United, with several former players reportedly 'raving' about him in a WhatsApp group. However, the potential fee of around £75 million remains a sticking point.

Former players impressed

Quinton Fortune revealed that the Brighton midfielder has caught the eye of United's alumni. "In terms of talent, I cannot touch Carlos Baleba," Fortune told Premier Bet. "He is unbelievable. I've seen him. I'm on the WhatsApp group with the other ex-players from Manchester United and we've all been speaking about him. Even Danny Welbeck, when he was at Brighton, was raving about him."

Baleba was linked with a move to Old Trafford a year ago, but Brighton's asking price of over £100 million proved too steep. United were only willing to offer £60 million at the time.

Fee concerns

Fortune echoes the club's reservations about the financial aspect of any deal. "There's no doubt he is talented, but for that sort of money, he needs to already be at a higher level for Manchester United," he said. "To justify a nine-figure sum, any player must have an instant impact comparable to legends like Paul Scholes or Roy Keane."

"I hear Manchester United fans and I think Carlos Baleba is a wonderful player with an amazing left foot and good pace," Fortune continued. "He reminds me a little bit of Anderson, from Brazil, who played for Manchester United because he could beat his man in midfield and drive the team on, but forgive me. For £100m I want a player I can compare to Paul Scholes, Roy Keane or Nicky Butt."

Current situation

Brighton are open to offers this summer, though United have already strengthened with Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans. Baleba, who faces a spell on the sidelines due to an ankle injury, has two years left on his contract with an option for a further 12 months. He has made 92 Premier League appearances, scoring three goals, all in 2024/25.
