Former Liverpool striker Emile Heskey has urged patience with Florian Wirtz after the German midfielder endured a challenging first season at Anfield. The Reds broke their transfer record to sign Wirtz for up to £116 million last summer, though that mark was later surpassed by Alexander Isak. Wirtz managed seven goals and 10 assists in 49 appearances, but was often outshone by Dominik Szoboszlai.
Speaking to betting site Hajper, Heskey predicted Wirtz could eventually break Bruno Fernandes' Premier League assist record. 'That's why they spent all that money on him,' Heskey said. 'I'd like to think he'll come good. He's just found it very difficult so far.' Heskey also suggested Liverpool need to adjust their style of play to restore energy and intensity.
Heskey compared Wirtz's movement to Philippe Coutinho, noting his ability to find pockets of space. However, he added that Wirtz lacks the power and energy to drive the team forward at present. 'It's the next little bit, and more understanding with the players around him, that he needs,' Heskey said. 'Let's give him next season and see how he goes.'
The former England international also identified Nottingham Forest midfielder Elliot Anderson as a potential target for Liverpool, praising his mobility and energy. Heskey expressed concern over Alexis Mac Allister's form, saying his 'legs have gone a little bit.' Liverpool are expected to be active in the summer transfer window following the confirmed exits of Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson.
