Liverpool are reportedly interested in signing Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak this summer, but a proposed swap deal involving Darwin Nunez has already been dismissed by the Magpies, according to sources.
The Reds are expected to target a new number nine at the end of the season, with Nunez having struggled in front of goal, scoring just six times this campaign. The Uruguayan, who joined Liverpool for a substantial fee in 2022, has not had the same impact as Isak, who arrived at St James' Park in the same transfer window.
Both Liverpool and Arsenal have been linked with Isak in recent weeks. The Athletic has confirmed Liverpool's admiration for the Swedish striker, though the club would only firm up their interest if Isak is 'genuinely available' for transfer. Newcastle, however, are determined to keep their star striker and are planning contract talks at the end of the season.
The Chronicle reported earlier this week that Newcastle are among the clubs likely to be offered the chance to sign Nunez for £60 million in the summer, indicating Liverpool may be ready to cut their losses. However, the 'wild' proposal of Newcastle receiving Nunez plus cash for Isak has been 'dismissed out of hand'.
Newcastle chief executive Darren Eales has stressed that the club is in a strong position regarding Isak and other key players, who are all on long-term contracts. “The reality is that all of our players are under long-term deals,” Eales said. “They’re committed to the club. So, from that perspective, we’re not looking to move any player on.”
