Michael Carrick has declared that Marcus Rashford "is our player" when quizzed on the forward's future at Manchester United. Rashford has returned to the club following a loan spell at Barcelona, where he impressed last season.
Rashford's Return and Carrick's Comments
Speaking after United's pre-season fixture against Leeds United on Wednesday night, Carrick stressed that Rashford remains a United player and that nothing unusual has happened behind the scenes. Rashford did not play in that match but has joined the squad for their training camp in Ireland.
"He's our player, you know, and he's come back great. He's just like any other player," Carrick said. "I've known Marcus a long time and, you know, he gives us something a little bit different. And he's been in great spirits since he's been back."
Transfer Speculation and Contract Details
Rashford had been widely tipped to rejoin Barcelona on a permanent basis, but the Catalan club instead signed Anthony Gordon and Karim Adeyemi. Reports suggest he is expected to stay at United unless a bid is submitted by a top European club, which would seemingly rule out a move to Tottenham, who have been credited with interest.
Rashford will earn an extra £4m this season if he remains at Old Trafford due to a contract clause related to United's Champions League qualification. A previous clause that would have allowed him to join any club for £40m, apart from Manchester City or Liverpool, is now said to have expired.
Carrick's History and Upcoming Fixture
Carrick played alongside Rashford at United before coaching him as part of Jose Mourinho's backroom team, and briefly took charge of him during a caretaker spell. Rashford has two years left on his £325,000 per week deal, signed in summer 2023 following a 30-goal campaign.
He could feature against AC Milan, now managed by Ruben Amorim, in Poland this weekend.
