Ann's Pantry in Moelfre, Anglesey, is celebrating 100 years of serving the community since it first opened its doors in 1926. The café, known for its traditional and cosy atmosphere, has been a beloved dining and gathering spot for generations.
A Century of Service
Current proprietor Laura Pritchard Griffiths, who has managed the establishment since 2003, expressed pride in reaching this milestone. "It's amazing that the café has been kept under the same name for 100 years. I really enjoy being part of something this old," she said.
To mark the centenary, Ann's Pantry is organising a programme of centenary supper clubs and afternoon teas, offering patrons the chance to participate in its extraordinary legacy, as reported by North Wales Live.
Integral to Village Life
The café has remained integral to village existence for decades, serving successive generations of families. Laura noted it has been "lovely" observing how the venture has stayed relevant in countless lives, uniting the neighbourhood and tourists season after season.
Numerous intriguing stories from the café's history exist. The name pays tribute to the café's creator, and two individuals named Ann have featured in its narrative. Local folklore maintains the café became particularly sought-after during wartime rationing after its proprietor succeeded in obtaining chocolate when it was nearly unobtainable. Another tale suggests that when Sunday alcohol consumption was prohibited after the war, beer was quietly dispensed in teapots.
Local Produce and Offerings
Today, Ann's Pantry remains committed to supporting local produce, with many suppliers hailing from Anglesey and throughout North Wales. The café offers breakfast and lunch year-round, with afternoon teas and evening meals available during the summer season, alongside its popular Sip and Supper evenings. A well-stocked bar makes it a perfect spot for a leisurely summer evening.
The café grows its own apples, which are used in house-made chutneys and classic apple crumble. During colder months, the fireplace provides a snug haven after a seaside stroll.
