Jannik Sinner and Novak Djokovic will clash in a highly anticipated Wimbledon semi-final on Friday, July 12. The match, a collision of tennis generations, is scheduled on Centre Court following the first-round encounter between British wildcard Arthur Fery and Alexander Zverev.
Defending Champion Sinner Faces Djokovic
Sinner, the world No.1, is defending the maiden grass-court title he won against Carlos Alcaraz last year. Alcaraz, the world No.2, is absent due to injury, leaving Djokovic, 39, to face the defending champion in the last four. Djokovic is chasing a record-equalling eighth Wimbledon crown, which would tie him with Roger Federer. The Serb already surpassed Federer's record for most men's matches won at the Championships after beating Roman Safiullin in the fourth round.
Path to the Semi-Finals
Both players faced challenges en route to the semi-finals. Sinner was pushed to five sets by Djokovic's compatriot Miomir Kecmanovic in his opening match. Djokovic dropped a set in every match except his second-round win over Stefanos Tsitsipas. Their head-to-head stands at 6-5 in Sinner's favour after 11 meetings. Djokovic won their most recent encounter, a five-set thriller in the Australian Open semi-finals, before losing to Alcaraz in the final. On grass at Wimbledon, they have met three times: Sinner won in straight sets at the semi-final stage last year, while Djokovic prevailed in the 2022 quarter-final and 2023 semi-final.
Djokovic is seeking his first major title since the 2023 US Open, which brought his Grand Slam tally to 24.
