Jannik Sinner Advances to Miami Open Final with Victory Over Alexander Zverev
World number two Jannik Sinner has secured his place in the Miami Open final after a commanding performance against Alexander Zverev on Friday. The Italian triumphed with a score of 6-3, 7-6(4), moving him one step closer to achieving the prestigious 'Sunshine Double'.
Sinner's Dominant Run Continues
Following his recent victory at Indian Wells earlier this month, Sinner is now on the brink of making tennis history. He will face Czech player Jiri Lehecka in Sunday's final, where a win would see him become the first male player since Roger Federer in 2017 to claim both the Indian Wells and Miami Open titles in the same season.
After sealing the match point with a powerful serve that Zverev failed to return, Sinner celebrated with an emphatic 'Let's go!'. Reflecting on his performance, the four-time Grand Slam champion stated, 'It has been an incredible swing. I've been trying to play as many matches as possible and I couldn't do any better. Today was a very tough encounter; he played some incredible tennis, but I was serving very well, especially in the end and in the crucial moments.'
Lehecka's Impressive Path to the Final
In the other semi-final, Jiri Lehecka delivered a stunning display to defeat Arthur Fils 6-2, 6-2 in just 75 minutes. This victory marks Lehecka's first appearance in a Masters 1000 final. The 24-year-old broke his 21-year-old French opponent early in the match and maintained control throughout.
Fils showed brief signs of a comeback at the start of the second set but was hampered by inconsistency, committing 21 unforced errors compared to Lehecka's 14, along with three double faults. Lehecka expressed his excitement, saying, 'I'm very excited that I'm in a final. Definitely one of my goals, but at the same time it's just a sport, there are more important things going on in the world right now. I'm just trying to do what I do best.'
Potential Double Sunshine Double in 2026
This year could witness a double Sunshine Double achievement. On the women's side, world number one and Indian Wells champion Aryna Sabalenka is set to face Coco Gauff in the Miami Open final on Saturday. If both Sinner and Sabalenka secure victories, it would mark a rare simultaneous accomplishment in professional tennis.
Sinner's current form is formidable, having extended his winning streak to 16 consecutive Masters 1000 matches. As the heavy favourite for Sunday's final, all eyes will be on whether he can complete this historic feat and cement his status as one of the sport's elite players.
