As we reach the final day of the royal meeting, our man believes he has solved the annual puzzle presented by the Wokingham Handicap, among his four selections.
Wokingham Stakes Selection
I spy with my little eye the winner of the Wokingham Stakes. This historic sprint handicap is often won by a horse with Group-race form these days and John and Thady Gosden's SPY CHIEF (5.00) fits the bill.
He was runner-up in the Group 3 Jersey Stakes at this meeting last year and he went on to run a decent race when only beaten three lengths in the top-level July Cup at Newmarket.
There was a lot to like about his return to action when beaten a neck by smart prospect Almeraq in a Salisbury Listed contest. His draw in stall 30 should be an advantage as much of the action on Ascot's straight course this week has been down the stands' side. Have 1pt each-way at 12-1. Most bookies are paying out on six places.
Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes Tip
FLORA OF BERMUDA (3.40) lines up in the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes over the same distance. She hasn't had much luck in Group 1 sprints over the past couple of seasons but I've no doubt she has the ability to win a top prize when things go her way.
Her third behind Lazzat in this race 12 months ago showed her class and she wasn't helped by taking a hefty bump when trying to get out to deliver her challenge.
She also found traffic problems when third in Haydock's Group 1 Sprint Cup in September and she kicked off this season with victory in a strong Newmarket Listed contest. There's a stack of early pace in today's race and that is another reason to be positive about her chance. Have 1pt each-way at 14-1. Most firms are offering four places.
Golden Gates Stakes Recommendation
PRINCLING (5.35) is going to love stepping up to 1m2f for the first time in the Golden Gates Stakes. His novice form was so good he was sent off favourite for the Silver Bowl that was rerouted to Carlisle from Haydock.
He didn't quite have the pace for that competitive handicap but his stamina kicked in on the final climb to the finish. This race could suit him perfectly. Have 1pt each-way at 11-1. Most bookies go five places.
Norfolk Stakes Bet
Well-drawn SOCIAL SYMBOL (2.30) looks overpriced in the Norfolk Stakes. He won nicely on his debut at Ripon in a race that had a bit of depth to the form. Have 1pt each-way at 40-1. Most firms are paying out on four places.
