Rangers are reportedly closing in on a deal to bring Ross McCrorie back to the club, according to The Rangers Review. The 28-year-old defender, who left Ibrox for Aberdeen in 2021 before moving to Bristol City, is seen as a key addition to fill the void left by captain James Tavernier, who departed at the end of the season. Loanee Max Aarons has also returned to parent club Bournemouth after a disappointing spell in Glasgow.
McCrorie's Potential Role and Competition
McCrorie is expected to battle Dujon Sterling for the right-back position next season. The Scotland international, capped twice, broke into Rangers' first team under Steven Gerrard in 2017 before loan spells at Portsmouth and Aberdeen, with the latter becoming permanent in 2021. Two years later, he signed for Bristol City, where he became a regular at Ashton Gate.
Transfer Details and Interest
Amid rising transfer interest, Bristol City triggered a one-year option in McCrorie's contract at the end of last season. However, The Rangers Review reports that Rangers have fended off interest from English Championship sides to secure his return. The report also notes that two centre-back recruits and reinforcements in central midfield "are on the agenda."
Midfield Reinforcements Needed
The planned midfield additions come as Nicolas Raskin and Mohamed Diomande enter the final two years of their contracts, potentially leading Rangers to cash in on the duo. The club is looking to strengthen its squad after a season of transition.
