British tennis sensation Emma Raducanu has withdrawn from the Washington Open due to a persistent wrist injury, handing a walkover to former world number one Naomi Osaka. The 21-year-old US Open champion was set to face Osaka in a highly anticipated second-round clash but was forced to pull out after experiencing discomfort during practice.
Raducanu, who has been managing the injury for several months, said in a statement: "I’m disappointed to have to withdraw, but my wrist hasn’t fully recovered. I need to prioritise my long-term health and fitness." Her withdrawal marks another setback in what has been a challenging season for the young Brit.
Osaka, who received a bye into the next round, will now face either Jessica Pegula or Peyton Stearns in the quarter-finals. The Japanese star is continuing her comeback after taking a break from tennis last year for mental health reasons.
Meanwhile, fellow British player Katie Boulter remains in contention at the Washington Open after a straight-sets victory over American qualifier Hailey Baptiste. Boulter, ranked 85th in the world, is aiming to build momentum ahead of the US Open later this month.
Raducanu’s withdrawal raises questions about her participation in upcoming tournaments, including the US Open, where she made history in 2021 by becoming the first qualifier to win a Grand Slam. Fans and analysts will be closely monitoring her recovery in the coming weeks.
