McIlroy Faces Scottish Open Ban Under PGA Restructure

Rory McIlroy is facing a potential ban from competing in the Scottish Open in 2028 under the PGA Tour's proposed new structure, which would split the tour into a Championship series for top players and a Challenger series for others. The 37-year-old, currently playing the Scottish Open at the Renaissance Club in North Berwick, could be barred as a Championship golfer from entering the Scottish Open if it falls under the Challenger category.

Current Scottish Open Participation

McIlroy is vying for his second Scottish Open title, having won in 2023. The tournament is considered a key warm-up for The Open, which follows later this month. This year's field includes 14 of the world's top 20 players, competing for a £1.17 million winner's purse.

PGA Tour Restructure Details

The PGA Tour confirmed last month that from 2028, the tour will be divided into the Championship series, featuring high-ranking players like McIlroy, and the Challenger series. Championship events will have a minimum prize fund of £14.9 million ($20 million), far exceeding the Scottish Open's current £6.7 million ($9 million) purse. Under the new rules, Championship players would be prohibited from entering Challenger events.

McIlroy's Concerns

McIlroy has urged the PGA to ensure that tournaments such as the Scottish Open are not undermined by the regulations. "We've got to be careful with that because then these national opens lose the fabric of what they are," McIlroy said. "You can't call yourself a national open any more if it's a closed-off tournament and there's a certain number of guys. These events need to be treated differently than the Travelers Championship or RBC Heritage or whatever else is going to be in the Championship series."

Scottie Scheffler's Support

World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler has echoed McIlroy's stance. "It needs to work within the new schedule," Scheffler said. "It's an important one that we keep it in the Championship Series just because you get so many guys that come over here and play the week before [The Open]."

Current Format and Promotion Path

The Scottish Open currently allows both PGA Tour and DP World Tour players to compete. The proposed changes would restrict PGA golfers to their own series, though players who win two Challenger events in a season can earn promotion to the Championship level.

Upcoming Schedule

The Scottish Open runs from Thursday to Sunday at the Renaissance Club. Attention will then shift to The Open at Royal Birkdale the following week.
