Coco Gauff suffered a shock defeat in the Australian Open quarter-finals, losing to Elina Svitolina in just 59 minutes. The reigning French Open champion was among the pre-tournament favourites but produced a subdued performance, falling 6-1 6-2 on Rod Laver Arena.
The match took place amid a scorching heatwave in Melbourne, with temperatures reaching the mid-forties. Officials closed the roof to protect players and fans, but Gauff struggled to adapt, committing 26 unforced errors. Svitolina seized control early, breaking the American in the first game and dominating the opening set.
Gauff showed visible frustration, hitting herself on the forehead and later smashing her racket off court. Her form was branded 'very disappointing' by former doubles champion Jamie Murray, while Annabel Croft described it as 'a total annihilation' on BBC Radio 5 Live.
Svitolina, who advances to her first Australian Open semi-final, said: 'It means the world to me. I try to push myself, give myself motivation. Really happy to go through.' The victory will return the Ukrainian to the world's top 10.
