A traditional Christmas Day swim on the Jurassic Coast of Devon ended in tragedy after two men were swept out to sea in perilous conditions, with both remaining missing despite a major rescue operation.
Frantic Rescue Mission Replaces Festive Dip
What began as a joyful annual tradition for dozens of swimmers at Budleigh Salterton beach rapidly descended into chaos on Thursday morning. Participants had bounded into the water just before 10.25am, hoping for a bracing cold dip before their Christmas lunch. However, strong winds created huge, dangerous swells that dragged people underwater, turning the event into a frantic rescue mission.
Local resident Mike Brown, 60, who often takes part in the Christmas swim, described the sea as some of the worst conditions he had ever witnessed at the spot. He revealed he was unable to get out and was saved only after two brave men waded in and dragged him to safety.
Community Mourns Beloved Local Figure
One of the two missing men has been named as Matthew Upham, a 63-year-old local antique dealer described by friends as an experienced and fit daily sea swimmer. His heartbroken family have paid tribute, stating he was "deeply loved and will be forever missed". They expressed profound gratitude to the emergency services for their tireless efforts.
Friends told how Mr Upham had tried to exit the water but was washed back down the beach by a large wave. The second missing man, believed to be in his 40s, is thought to have entered the water in a brave attempt to assist Mr Upham. His identity has not yet been released.
A passing RNLI lifeboat on a training exercise was able to respond quickly, and HM Coastguard launched a major multi-agency search. Several other swimmers were pulled to safety and checked by paramedics, with some taken to hospital as a precaution. The extensive shoreline and offshore searches were finally stood down at 5pm on Christmas Day due to the atrocious sea state.
Authorities Issue Stern Safety Warnings
In the wake of the incident, authorities have urged extreme caution. Devon and Cornwall Police confirmed both men remain missing and maintained a presence at the scene. Detective Superintendent Hayley Costar had previously urged people not to swim on Boxing Day, highlighting cancelled official swims and existing weather warnings.
East Devon District Council echoed the warning, advising locals to "think twice before taking the plunge" this festive season. They emphasised that cold water shock, strong currents, and unpredictable weather can swiftly turn a quick dip into a serious emergency. The RNLI Exmouth team noted that conditions were extremely difficult and cold for their volunteers, who were out searching all day.
The Christmas Day swim at Budleigh Salterton is an unofficial, community-led event and is not supported by lifeguards. The tragedy has cast a shadow over similar festive swimming traditions held on beaches across the UK.
