Iran captain Alireza Jahanbakhsh has spoken out about the booing of the national anthem during their World Cup matches, expressing a desire for the tournament to unite the Iranian people. The team has played two goalless draws so far, against New Zealand and Belgium, and remains in contention for the knockout rounds. However, the off-field controversy over the anthem has continued to dominate headlines.
Mixed Reactions to the Anthem
During Iran's opening match against New Zealand at Los Angeles Stadium, the national anthem was met with a mixture of jeers and applause, with the negative reaction softening towards the end. In the second match against Belgium, the boos were louder and more sustained, echoing around the stadium. The divided response reflects the political tensions both within Iran and among its diaspora.
Jahanbakhsh's Call for Unity
After the goalless draw with Belgium, Jahanbakhsh addressed the media, saying: "We take both. I think there are good days, bad days for every team, and also, like I said, we play for all the Iranians in Iran, outside Iran, with whatever ideology, whatever preferences they have, and we make sure to make them happy, because I'm sure at the end of the day, they love Team Melli from the heart, and we respect them all." He emphasized that the team's focus is on performing well and making their fans proud, regardless of political differences.
Upcoming Decisive Match Against Egypt
Iran's final group stage match is against Egypt on Friday. A victory would secure their place in the Round of 32, a historic achievement. Egypt currently tops Group G after a 3-1 comeback win over New Zealand, inspired by Mohamed Salah. Belgium will face New Zealand in the other group match. Jahanbakhsh stressed the importance of staying focused: "Yeah, a hundred percent, like I said, this is, I think this is the spirit we have in the team. Yeah, the situation hasn't been the best, but like we don't want to keep repeating that because I think everyone is aware of that. But yeah, we go game by game."
Team Spirit and Determination
The Iran captain highlighted the team's resilience and determination to make their people proud. "We know they deserve a lot. Even the people who came to the stadium today with the different ideas, different ideology, different culture from different cities in Iran coming from. So that's bringing people together, the united that is. And on top of that, like I said, I think that makes us stronger and live the result to the gut," he said. The team is taking a game-by-game approach, aiming to recover well and bring the same energy to the match against Egypt.
