A day of summer fun on the south coast turned into unimaginable tragedy this week after a 15-year-old boy died following a swim in the sea off Bournemouth beach.
The teenager, who has not been formally named, was pulled from the water unconscious on Wednesday afternoon after a major multi-agency rescue operation was launched. Despite the desperate efforts of emergency services and his own father, who was seen frantically searching the water, the boy was pronounced dead a short time later.
Desperate Scenes on the Sand
Horrified sunbathers and holidaymakers looked on as the dramatic events unfolded. Witnesses described the chilling moment they realised something was terribly wrong.
"We saw the boy's father running into the sea, shouting his son's name," one onlooker recounted. "The panic on his face was absolutely heart-wrenching. He was utterly desperate, scanning the waves. It was clear a fun family day out had turned into every parent's worst nightmare."
Major Emergency Response
The alarm was raised just after 3:30 PM, triggering a massive emergency response. Coastguard helicopters, RNLI lifeboats from both Bournemouth and Poole, and paramedics from South Western Ambulance Service all raced to the scene.
Dorset Police confirmed they were called to reports of a person requiring assistance in the water. The force has since launched an investigation to piece together the exact circumstances that led to the tragedy.
"A teenage boy was recovered from the water and given CPR at the scene," a police spokesperson stated. "Very sadly, he was later pronounced dead. Our thoughts are with his family and friends during this devastating time."
