As England prepares to face Croatia in the 2026 World Cup, Declan Rice has opened up about his pre-match superstitions that he believes are crucial for victory. The 27-year-old midfielder insists on wearing a specific pair of black trainers with his tracksuit before every game, fearing that deviating from this ritual could lead to defeat.
Superstitious Routines
Rice admitted in a video clip that the shoes hold history for him and that he always wears them. "In my mind, if I don't wear them, I don't think we're gonna win," he said, describing himself as "proper superstitious." This is a common trait among footballers, who often have routines involving lucky underwear, sock order, or other habits.
Beyond footwear, Rice also sticks to a specific pre-match meal: four pancakes topped with syrup or honey. This recommendation came from the nutritionist at his Premier League club, Arsenal. "Honestly, it's been a game-changer. I don't understand the science behind it, what's in them or anything like that, but it gives me such a high energy boost," he shared.
World Cup Preparations
England's campaign begins tonight against Croatia, a team that famously defeated them in the 2018 semi-finals. The Three Lions have been in the United States for over two weeks acclimatising. However, a setback occurred on Tuesday when Tino Livramento was ruled out due to a calf injury, with Trevoh Chalobah called up as his replacement.
Manager Thomas Tuchel has kept the starting lineup uncertain, with four positions still undecided to keep players focused. Around 10,000 England supporters are expected to attend the match in Dallas, Texas. As Rice's lucky trainers and pancakes fuel his performance, fans hope these rituals will help secure a win.
