The 2026 World Cup has seen five teams eliminated after just two group stage matches, thanks to a new tiebreaker rule that prioritizes head-to-head results over goal difference. Under the expanded 48-team format, the top two from each group plus the eight best third-placed sides advance to the Round of 32, but early exits have already been confirmed for Haiti, Turkiye, Tunisia, Jordan, and Panama.
New Tiebreaker Rule Speeds Up Eliminations
Unlike previous World Cups where goal difference was the first tiebreaker since 1970, the 2026 tournament uses head-to-head records between tied teams. This change, introduced alongside the expansion to 48 nations, means a team can be eliminated after two games if they lost to the side currently in third place. In Qatar 2022, only two teams were knocked out after two matches; this year, five have already been sent home.
The rule has also accelerated group winners: four teams have secured top spot after two games, compared to none at the same stage in 2022. A team can now be three points clear of second place and clinch the group, whereas previously a four-point gap was required.
Knocked Out: Haiti, Turkiye, Tunisia, Jordan, Panama
Haiti became the first team eliminated, losing 1-0 to Scotland and 3-0 to Brazil in Group C. Their first World Cup since 1974 ended prematurely. Turkiye, expected to progress from a group with USA, Australia, and Paraguay, suffered a 2-0 loss to Australia and a 1-0 defeat to Paraguay, the latter while Paraguay played with ten men for the entire second half.
Tunisia endured a disastrous campaign, losing 5-1 to Sweden and 4-0 to Japan. Coach Sabri Lamouchi was sacked after the first match, replaced by Herve Renard, but the team still conceded nine goals in two games. Jordan, making their World Cup debut, led Algeria 1-0 but lost 2-1, following a 3-1 defeat to Austria, confirming their exit. Panama, underdogs in a group with England, Croatia, and Ghana, lost 1-0 to both Ghana and Croatia, but remain competitive.
Qualified Teams: Mexico, USA, Germany, Argentina, France, Norway, Colombia
Cohosts Mexico and USA were the first to book Round of 32 spots, winning Groups A and D respectively. Germany topped Group E, Argentina won Group J, and France and Norway both qualified from Group I, with their final match deciding the group winner. Colombia secured their place in Group K and will top the group with a draw against Portugal.
The Round of 32 runs from June 28 to July 3. Other groups remain undecided, with final group matches determining the remaining qualifiers.
