Ebbw Vale player Curtis Gregory is facing growing calls for a lifetime ban after a stamp on an opponent during Thursday night's Super Rygbi Cymru match against Llandovery at Church Bank. The incident, which occurred just before half-time, was shown live on S4C and has since made headlines around the world.
Red Card for Stamp on Joe Powell
Referee Craig Evans issued a permanent red card to Gregory in the 35th minute. The flashpoint came when a ruck formed and Llandovery's Joe Powell briefly held onto Gregory's leg, prompting Gregory to stamp down on Powell's outstretched limb with significant force. Powell appeared to escape without visible injury and immediately shoved Gregory backwards in response.
Explaining the decision, Evans told the Ebbw Vale captain: "We have a stamp by this player. I did ask the question if anything aggravated it. My AR (assistant referee) didn't see anything. It's a stamp on the leg. Red card. Permanent."
Global Reaction and Calls for Severe Punishment
Footage of the incident quickly circulated online, with major news sites in South Africa and Australia picking up the story. News.com.au led with the headline "Rugby shocked by 'most vindictive' foul play as furious fans call for lifetime ban."
Social media discourse has seen widespread calls for the most severe punishment. One commentator said: "Difficult to know how long to ban Curtis Gregory for here. But it has to be long. Very long." Another added: "Unbelievably thick and very dangerous." A third viewer remarked: "One of the worst I've seen watching rugby for nearly 40 years. Should never step on the field again."
Rugby journalist Andy McGeady compared the incident to a 1995 stamp on Doddie Weir, saying: "All of the books will be thrown. Long ban incoming." Another viewer said: "Yeah that's a lifetime ban. That's actually p***** me off, one of the scummiest things I've seen on a rugby pitch."
WRU Awaiting Referee's Report
The Welsh Rugby Union is currently awaiting the official's report before a disciplinary panel will consider the case and any sanctions. Despite going 15-0 down and being reduced to 13 men at one stage, Ebbw Vale rallied to win the match 31-15 with 31 unanswered points.
