In a significant blow to Australia's preparations, powerhouse prop Taniela Tupou has been ruled out of this weekend's crucial Test match against England at Perth's Optus Stadium.
The news comes as Wallabies coach Joe Schmidt announces a reshuffled lineup, with Tane Edmed earning a surprise start at fly-half in place of the injured Tom Lynagh.
Injury Crisis Deepens for Wallabies
The absence of Tupou, affectionately known as the 'Tongan Thor', represents a major setback for the Australian pack. The destructive tighthead prop joins a growing injury list that includes key players like Angus Bell and Max Jorgensen.
Schmidt confirmed the news with evident frustration: "Taniela won't be available this week. He's got a bit of a cork from the last game, and we just don't think he'll be ready to go."
Edmed Seizes Opportunity
In the backline, 23-year-old Tane Edmed gets the nod at number 10, forming a new halves partnership with Brumbies teammate Nic White. The Waratahs playmaker replaces Tom Lynagh, who suffered a knee injury during training.
"Tane's been training really well," Schmidt stated. "He's a confident young man and he's earned this opportunity through his consistent performances."
Forward Reshuffle
With Tupou unavailable, Schmidt has turned to the experienced Allan Alaalatoa to anchor the scrum. The changes continue in the back row, where Langi Gleeson gets the starting spot at number eight ahead of Rob Valetini.
The Wallabies coach emphasised the need for adaptability: "We've had to be flexible with our selections due to the injury situation, but we're confident this group can get the job done."
High Stakes Encounter
This weekend's match takes on added significance as Australia looks to build momentum ahead of the British and Irish Lions tour next year. After recent struggles against England, including a quarter-final exit in the 2019 World Cup, the Wallabies are desperate to reclaim bragging rights.
The stage is set for a fascinating tactical battle between Schmidt and England's new coach Felix Jones, with both teams looking to impose their style on the game.
