England Ring Changes for Second Springbok Test
England head coach Steve Borthwick has named Henry Pollock and Fin Smith in the starting XV for the second Test against South Africa at Twickenham on Saturday. Pollock, the Northampton Saints back-rower, will make his first international start, while Smith returns at fly-half after being rested for the first Test.
The match comes just a week after England's narrow 23-21 defeat to the Springboks in the opening Test, a result that left Borthwick's side with a 1-0 deficit in the two-match series. Pollock's inclusion is a reward for his impressive performances off the bench in the first Test, where he made a significant impact with his carrying and defensive work.
Pollock's Rise and Smith's Return
Henry Pollock, 23, has been one of the standout performers in the Premiership this season, earning his first England cap as a replacement in the first Test. His powerful ball-carrying and ability to disrupt opposition breakdowns have caught the eye of the coaching staff. "Henry has shown tremendous form for Northampton and in his cameo last week," Borthwick said. "We believe he is ready to step up and make a real impact from the start."
Fin Smith, 22, returns to the No. 10 jersey after missing the first Test due to a minor knock. The Gloucester fly-half has been in excellent form this season, orchestrating attacks with his tactical kicking and vision. His partnership with scrum-half Alex Mitchell will be crucial in unlocking the Springbok defence. "Fin is a quality player who brings control and creativity to our backline," Borthwick added. "We are confident he can guide us to a series-levelling win."
Other Changes to the Starting XV
Borthwick has made two other changes to the side that lost the first Test. Lock Charlie Ewels comes into the second row in place of Jonny Hill, while wing Adam Radwan replaces the injured Tommy Freeman. Ewels, who has 15 caps, will bring physicality and lineout prowess, while Radwan's pace will add a different dimension to England's attacking game.
The bench also sees alterations, with hooker Jamie Blamire and flanker Sam Underhill among the replacements. Underhill, who has been recovering from a concussion, is set to make his first appearance since the Six Nations.
Springboks Unchanged for Second Test
South Africa head coach Jacques Nienaber has named an unchanged starting XV for the second Test, after their narrow victory last weekend. The Springboks will rely on their powerful forward pack and experienced backline, led by captain Siya Kolisi, to secure a series sweep. Fly-half Handré Pollard, who kicked the winning penalty in the first Test, retains his place.
England will need to improve their discipline and set-piece execution to overcome the world champions. Borthwick emphasised the need for accuracy: "We created opportunities last week but failed to convert them. We have worked hard on our decision-making and execution, and I expect a much more clinical performance."
Match Details and Series Context
The second Test kicks off at 16:00 BST at Twickenham. A win for England would level the series, while a Springbok victory would give them a 2-0 series win. England last defeated South Africa in November 2021, with their most recent home win against the Springboks coming in 2018.
With Pollock and Smith in the lineup, England fans will hope for a more dynamic and cohesive display. The match is expected to be a fiercely contested battle, with both sides eager to assert dominance ahead of the Rugby World Cup next year.
