Meg Jones Steps Up as Red Roses Captain for Women's Six Nations
Meg Jones has been confirmed as the new captain of England's Red Roses for the upcoming Women's Six Nations tournament, taking over from regular skipper Zoe Stratford, who is expecting her first child. Stratford, who guided the team to a historic World Cup victory on home soil in September 2025, announced her pregnancy on Wednesday, ruling her out of the competition.
Leadership Transition and Support Structure
Jones, a 29-year-old centre, has been promoted from her role as one of two vice-captains last year, demonstrating her readiness for this elevated position. She will be supported by a robust leadership trio, including No 8 Alex Matthews and hooker Amy Cokayne, ensuring a cohesive approach throughout the Six Nations campaign.
In a statement, Jones expressed her excitement and gratitude, saying, "Firstly, I'm really excited for Zoe and wish her and her husband every happiness on their news. It's a huge honour to have been named captain of the Red Roses. Mitch and I have built a strong relationship over the past three years, and it's a great feeling to have his trust to lead the group along with a tight leadership team."
Coach Mitchell's Strategy and Squad Announcement
Head coach John Mitchell, who recently signed a new contract, is set to unveil his England squad for the Six Nations on Friday. He is anticipated to introduce several uncapped players, reflecting a focus on youth development and fresh talent. Among the promising newcomers expected to receive call-ups are Bristol Bears back rower Demelza Short and wing Millie David, both of whom have shown impressive form in Premiership Women's Rugby (PWR).
Other young prospects like Harlequins centre Sarah Parry and Loughborough No 8 Haineala Lutui are also in contention, having previously trained with the Red Roses. Mitchell's selection strategy aims to blend experience with emerging stars, as the team navigates the absence of key players.
Team Changes and Challenges Ahead
The Red Roses face significant roster adjustments beyond Stratford's absence. Hooker Lark Atkin-Davies and lock Abbie Ward are also pregnant and will miss the tournament, while wing Abby Dow and centre Emily Scarratt have retired since the World Cup. Scarratt has transitioned to Mitchell's coaching staff, adding her expertise off the field.
Jones emphasized her commitment to maintaining team spirit, stating, "I'm buzzing to get back in camp with the girls for the Six Nations. I'll just be the same old Meg and know I'll have great support from Zoe, the leaders, and the whole squad." England will kick off their Six Nations campaign against Ireland at Twickenham's Allianz Stadium on Saturday, 11 April 2026, marking a crucial test for the new leadership and refreshed lineup.
