Former England Rugby Captain Lewis Moody to Lead Major Charity Cycling Challenge

Lewis Moody, the former England rugby union captain, has announced a significant 500-mile cycling challenge scheduled for June 2026. The event aims to raise substantial funds and increase public awareness in the ongoing battle against motor neurone disease (MND). Moody revealed his personal diagnosis with the condition in October, adding profound personal significance to this ambitious undertaking.

Seven-Day Journey Across England

The challenging route will span seven consecutive days, commencing on Sunday 14 June and concluding on Saturday 20 June. The journey will begin at Kingston Park, home of the Newcastle Red Bulls, and culminate at Twickenham's Allianz Stadium, where Moody is scheduled to deliver the match ball before the Gallagher Premiership final.

The carefully planned itinerary will include stops at several locations deeply connected to Moody's rugby career. These include Leicester Tigers and Bath Rugby, two clubs where he made significant contributions during his playing days. Additionally, the route will pass through Bracknell RFC, where Moody first embarked on his rugby journey as a five-year-old child.

Support from Rugby Legends and Family

Moody will not be undertaking this challenge alone. He will be joined by several notable figures from the rugby world, including fellow 2003 Rugby World Cup champions Jonny Wilkinson and Mike Tindall. Furthermore, Moody's teenage sons, Dylan and Ethan, will accompany their father on portions of the journey, adding a meaningful family dimension to the event.

"Since retiring from professional rugby in 2012, I have committed to completing a fundraising challenge every single year," Moody explained. "Living with MND has not diminished my determination to continue this tradition in 2026. I recognize that I may have limited opportunities to push myself physically in this manner going forward, which makes this 500-mile cycling challenge particularly significant and timely."

Benefiting the My Name'5 Doddie Foundation

All funds raised through this initiative will be directed to the My Name'5 Doddie Foundation (MNDF), the leading charity dedicated to MND research and support. The organization was established by the late Scottish rugby icon Doddie Weir, who was diagnosed with MND in 2016 and passed away in 2022.

To date, the foundation has committed more than £23.5 million to vital MND research programmes and has provided over £2 million in direct support to families affected by the disease. Moody expressed deep admiration for Weir's pioneering work and sees his own efforts as continuing this important legacy.

"The foundation has achieved incredible things," Moody stated. "Doddie was a true pioneer and an extraordinary character. I feel as though I am being brought off the bench to take that baton forward and help complete this crucial mission. While this sounds straightforward, it represents an immensely difficult challenge to overcome."

Personal Motivation and Broader Impact

Moody emphasized that the challenge extends beyond mere physical endurance. "This endeavour is about far more than accumulating miles," he noted. "Like so many aspects of life, it fundamentally concerns people – friends coming together, offering mutual support, drawing strength from camaraderie, and genuinely hoping to make a meaningful difference."

The former flanker, who earned 71 caps for England and toured with the British and Irish Lions in 2005, has a established history of charitable work. Following his retirement, he founded The Lewis Moody Foundation to promote awareness of brain tumours in children. Now, he redirects his efforts toward supporting the MND community.

"Above all, this is about utilizing the energy and platform I am fortunate to possess to create the greatest possible impact for everyone living with MND," Moody affirmed. "We aim to raise essential funds for the MNDF, accelerate research progress, and help drive the transformative changes and outcomes that this community desperately requires. I am committed to doing everything within my power to make a tangible difference, building upon the monumental work of giants who have preceded me."

Looking Forward to the Challenge

Moody acknowledged both the personal and collective significance of the upcoming challenge. "There is a slightly selfish element to this cycling challenge," he admitted. "I have completed at least one challenge annually since retiring, sometimes more. I was determined to undertake another while I still physically can. I cannot predict how many more opportunities I will have, which is why organizing this event promptly felt so crucial."

The Lewis Moody & Friends Cycle Challenge represents a major fundraising initiative that combines athletic endurance with heartfelt philanthropy. As Moody and his companions prepare to pedal across England, they carry with them the hopes of the entire MND community and the legacy of those who have fought this disease before them.
