Harry Kane has admitted that the post-match celebrations following England's World Cup opener against Croatia were among the most special moments of his international career. The England captain was visibly emotional as the team sang Oasis's 'Wonderwall' with the travelling fans at the AT&T Stadium.
A Moment to Remember
Speaking after the match, Kane described the scene as one of his favourite ever experiences in an England shirt. 'I know it's just the first game, and we're not getting carried away, but just that emotional connection with the fans, we know how much it means to them. I think they see how much it means to us,' he said.
Kane, who now has 115 caps, equalling David Beckham's milestone, reflected on the togetherness within the squad under manager Thomas Tuchel. 'This one feels a little bit different. Our roles have changed a little bit, being the more experienced guys. There's a freshness about it, a hunger and excitement from the players.'
Penalty Drama
Kane also revealed his nerves when his penalty had to be retaken after Croatia goalkeeper Dominik Livakovic was deemed off his line. 'I had done my research and saw that he liked to come off his line early, which is why I did a stutter. When the ref went to the VAR, I was 80 per cent sure it would be retaken, but you are still a bit nervous. I wanted to get us off to a good start, so it was very important.'
England's victory has set them up as genuine contenders for the World Cup, with Kane emphasising the squad's unity and determination to create more special moments for the fans.
