Jamie George has been reappointed as England captain for the summer Nations Championship tour, in the absence of Maro Itoie who is resting. The 35-year-old Saracens hooker will lead a 36-man squad that includes five uncapped players: Noah Caluori, Greg Fisilau, Benhard Janse van Rensburg, George Kloska, and Vilikesa Sela.
Borthwick Plays It Safe with Captaincy Choice
Steve Borthwick's decision to recall George as captain has been seen by some as a conservative move. George was dropped as captain before last year's Six Nations as Borthwick sought a change in mood. Critics argue that Leicester's Ollie Chessum, a rising leader certain to start, would have been a better choice to signal a fresh start. George and other senior players could have supported from the sidelines, projecting an image of renewal.
Brutal Schedule Across Three Continents
The tour features three Tests in successive weeks: against world champions South Africa in Johannesburg, Fiji at Everton's Hill Dickinson Stadium in Liverpool, and Argentina in Santiago del Estero. England are on a four-match losing streak and face extensive travel and climatic changes. Borthwick called it a "very demanding" schedule but expressed confidence in the squad's preparation and standards.
Five uncapped players have been selected: Noah Caluori (Saracens), Greg Fisilau (Exeter Chiefs), Benhard Janse van Rensburg (Bristol Bears), George Kloska (Bristol Bears), and Vilikesa Sela (Bath Rugby). Van Rensburg is ineligible against South Africa due to residency rules. The recall of Bath centre Max Ojomoh is also notable, but Northampton scrum-half Archie McParland misses out due to injury.
Fin Smith Admits Tough Season
Northampton fly-half Fin Smith, one of six Saints representatives in the squad, revealed he had to "fake" confidence after a difficult British & Irish Lions tour. "It's been a tough season," Smith said. "I probably just lost a bit of confidence and had to really try to get myself up for games at times. I was probably feeling like I had to fake it a little bit." He added that he will be happy looking back with the Premiership trophy and winners' medal.
Senior Players and Young Talent
The squad includes experienced players like Tom Curry, Ben Earl, George Ford, and Henry Slade, alongside emerging talents such as Henry Pollock and Asher Opoku-Fordjour. Borthwick has opted for a blend of youth and experience, but the demanding schedule and recent form raise questions about the team's ability to cope.
