Marcelo Bielsa unleashed his fury on a touchline reporter after Uruguay were eliminated from the 2026 World Cup in the group stage, following a 1-0 defeat to Spain. The result, sealed by a mistake from goalkeeper Fernando Muslera, left Uruguay bottom of Group H with just two points from draws against Saudi Arabia and Cape Verde.
Bielsa's outburst on the pitch
At full-time, Bielsa snapped at a TV reporter conducting an on-pitch interview, bellowing at them to hurry up. The incident was captured by BBC cameras and shared on social media, with the caption: 'Marcelo Bielsa couldn't contain his frustration.'
Earlier in the match, Uruguay captain Federico Valverde was substituted in the second half and appeared furious, refusing to acknowledge Bielsa as he walked to the bench. The night ended in further disgrace when forward Agustin Canobbio received a late red card for a wild tackle on Pau Cubarsi and then raised his hands to referee Ismail Elfath's chest. After the final whistle, Canobbio returned to the pitch to continue his protests, with BBC commentator Jonathan Pearce calling the behaviour 'a disgrace'.
Bielsa takes the blame
In his post-match press conference, the former Leeds United manager accepted full responsibility. 'What do I leave for Uruguayan football? Nothing,' Bielsa said. 'Because any contribution that a coach might make to football in a country after three years of work never truly takes hold if results aren't achieved.' He added: 'Fourth place in the qualifiers didn't count for much, and a third-place finish in the Copa America didn't, either. And there is obviously no need to spell it out after what happened now. A tenure that left nothing behind.'
Bielsa continued: 'Nobody wants to hear explanations. It is only natural that you don't want explanations. You aren't asking for an answer but you are blaming me for the outcome. That is ok. If you want an explanation, which I think is not what you want, I can tell you that we deserved to win seven points and we only got two. This is the result of my management.' He added: 'We did not manage to have an acceptable ratio from the shots we attempted and the goals we scored. The goals we conceded were avoidable.'
Group H outcomes
Spain topped Group H with nine points and will face Austria or Algeria in the round of 32. Cape Verde made history by becoming the smallest nation to reach the knockout stage, drawing 0-0 with Saudi Arabia to secure second place. The tournament debutants will now face defending champions Argentina in the round of 32. Uruguay finished bottom with two points, marking a disastrous campaign for the two-time World Cup winners.
