Fulham have confirmed the appointment of former Real Madrid head coach Alvaro Arbeloa as their new manager, signing a three-year contract that will keep him at Craven Cottage until the summer of 2029.
Arbeloa Replaces Marco Silva
The Cottagers were left without a head coach after Marco Silva decided to leave upon the expiry of his contract at the end of last season, taking over at Benfica to replace Jose Mourinho. Speculation had linked Arne Slot and Kieran McKenna with the role, but Arbeloa ultimately secured the position.
Arbeloa, a World Cup winner with Spain in 2010, brings a decorated playing career to west London, having represented Real Madrid, Liverpool, and West Ham United. His managerial experience, however, is limited to a six-month stint at Real Madrid's first team, which ended trophyless.
Troubled Spell at Real Madrid
Arbeloa began his coaching career with Real Madrid's B team in 2025 before being promoted to first-team head coach in January 2026 following the sacking of Xabi Alonso. Alonso has since taken charge of Fulham's west London rivals Chelsea, whom Arbeloa will face in his first Premier League match. Reports from Spain suggested Arbeloa clashed with several squad members during his tenure, contributing to a difficult period at the Bernabeu.
New Challenge at Fulham
Fulham finished last season just one point adrift of the European places, and Arbeloa expressed his excitement about the new challenge. "It is a real honour for me to be embarking on this new stage at Fulham FC, the oldest club in London," he said via the club's website. "I am really looking forward to experiencing the atmosphere at Craven Cottage with Fulham fans and beginning pre-season with the players next week. I am sure we are going to enjoy an incredible journey together."
Fulham owner Shahid Khan praised Arbeloa's interview process, stating that he "built an exceptional case" for himself throughout the discussions in June. "I am delighted that Alvaro has accepted the challenge to push Fulham forward, and I have no doubt that our squad, staff and fans will resonate with what his appointment means for the present and future of our Club," Khan said.
