England's Borthwick Issues Staunch Defence of Under-Pressure Scotland Coach Townsend
England head coach Steve Borthwick has publicly defended his Scottish counterpart Gregor Townsend, describing him as a "wonderful" coach, as pressure mounts on Townsend ahead of the upcoming Calcutta Cup match. This show of support comes after Scotland's disappointing opening Six Nations defeat to Italy, which has intensified scrutiny on Townsend's position.
Growing Scrutiny on Townsend's Role
Gregor Townsend is facing increasing questions about his future as Scotland head coach following a lacklustre start to the 2026 Six Nations campaign. The defeat to Italy has compounded frustrations after a disappointing 2025 season for the Scottish side. Additionally, Townsend has faced external distractions, including queries over his consultancy role with Red Bull and links to a potential coaching position at Newcastle.
Despite this, Townsend's overall record remains impressive. Since taking charge in 2017, he has achieved a 55% win rate, the best of any Scotland coach in the professional era. He has also notably transformed Scotland's fortunes in the Calcutta Cup, losing just twice to England in eight meetings during his tenure.
Borthwick's Full-Throated Support
In a robust defence of his opposite number, Steve Borthwick highlighted Townsend's coaching credentials and expressed surprise at the focus on his future rather than the team's performance. "I think Gregor Townsend is a wonderful coach," Borthwick stated. "I was told recently that he has the best win record of any Scotland coach in the professional era. Sir Ian McGeechan had two spells and I think Gregor sits above that."
Borthwick praised Townsend's tactical approach, particularly in attack. "The way he has coached the attack they have, and the way they move the ball, when they do that, they look terrific," he added. "I have immense respect for him as a coach and I find it surprising that people are not spending more time talking about Scotland, rather than not supporting their coach. I think he's a phenomenal coach and they should spend more time supporting him."
Calcutta Cup Challenge Ahead
Looking ahead to the highly anticipated Calcutta Cup clash, Borthwick acknowledged the threat posed by Scotland, despite their recent struggles. Scotland's performance in Rome was hampered by poor weather conditions, but they have generally had the upper hand against England in recent encounters.
Even last year's narrow victory for England at Twickenham saw Scotland's Finn Russell miss a late conversion that could have snatched victory. Borthwick emphasised the quality of the Scottish squad to his players. "This team likes to focus on themselves and what we’re aiming to do on the grass on Saturday," Borthwick explained. "They have full respect for the opposition, they’ve studied Scotland and have full respect for their players."
He specifically highlighted the strength of Scotland's backline, noting, "They are looking forward to the challenge of playing some top quality players. Their backline is virtually a Lions backline from last summer. They’re really excited by that."
Borthwick also pointed to the attacking flair shown by Glasgow Warriors as a blueprint for Scotland's potential. "You look at the way Glasgow are playing and how exciting they are. If [Scotland] come and play like that, they are going to really stretch our defence. And our defence was good on Saturday – it’ll need to be perfect this coming Saturday, against that."
As the Six Nations continues, all eyes will be on whether Townsend can rally his side and justify Borthwick's strong vote of confidence in the historic Calcutta Cup fixture.
